Friends,

Elsewhere in this bulletin you will see an announcement that we have a new tenant for the former Most Precious Blood School. Boston Preparatory Charter School has been leasing the building for over 10 years and have been the best neighbors. They have now built a brand new school on River St. and already have plans to expand. We wish them the best. We have been marketing our building for almost 2 years since we were told of Boston Prep’s plans. For the past 4 months we have been negotiating with Roxbury Preparatory Charter School to house their high school at Most Precious Blood. The Archdiocese of Boston Real Estate Department and Legal Department have been involved in all of the negotiations. It is not a simple process by any means. We are so grateful to Fr Peter Nolan and MPB parishioner John McCormack who worked tirelessly to draft and execute the contract with Boston Prep 10 years ago. We have the same arrangements with Roxbury Prep thanks to Fr Nolan’s and John McCormack’s insight and expertise.

The 3-year contract was signed this week and commences on August 1, 2017. We will see a lot of activity on Hyde Park Ave and Maple and Pine Streets over the next few weeks as they prepare to welcome over 300 students. Our school building is in wonderful condition and they will be very happy with their new home.

None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the time and attention given to the process by our Chief of Finance and Operations, John Matthews, and our Office Manager, Karen King. They have been in constant contact with the Archdiocesan officials throughout the lengthy process leading up to the signing of the lease. Our MPB Finance Council and the Collaborative Pastoral Council were very much aware of what was possible, but the final documentation happened while both committees are on summer hiatus.

As you are well aware, Most Precious Blood parish would be unable to pay their operating costs if we were to solely rely on our Offertory Collection, which averages $1,600 per week. So the lease of our school building so soon after our last tenant left is truly a gift (some would see it as a miracle).

We look forward to a strong working relationship with the staff, faculty and student body of Roxbury Prep. We welcome them to our Hyde Park community and look forward to a meaningful friendship.

This means there are 4 Charter Schools in our immediate neighborhood; Boston Renaissance–Hyde Park Ave, Academy of the Pacific Rim–Westinghouse Building, Boston Prep–River St and Roxbury Prep–Hyde Park Ave.

We are grateful to all those who have contributed to making this possible.

Enjoy Life!
Fr. Ron Coyne
