Cardinal O'Malley Turns 75

All priests in the Archdiocese of Boston (including bishops) have to write a letter offering to retire at that age. Priests of the Archdiocese write to the bishop, bishops submit their letter to the Pope. If the priest requests retirement, it would be normally granted, if he is willing to continue in ministry it is appreciated and usually granted.

The Cardinal was willing to continue as Archbishop of Boston and the Pope was grateful so Cardinal O’Malley will remain with us. Every year following your 75th birthday, you are asked to resubmit your desire to continue if you are still in ministry. Two things to keep in mind: 1. Cardinal O’Malley’s motto is “Do whatever He tells you.” 2. To whom do you think the Pope sends his retirement letter?
